History of the Traditional Irish Cottage

In its most basic form the traditional Irish cottage was a humble single-roomed dwelling that sometimes also housed the owners’ animals. These were working cottages, in that their inhabitants strove to earn a living from the surrounding lands or sea.

Traditional builders used whatever local materials were to hand, using skills learned and passed on from one generation to the next. Roofs were fashioned from thatch or slate and external walls of local stone or mud were often lime-rendered and washed.

The buildings varied from region to region, depending on climate and availability of local materials.

These prints illustrate several different styles of Irish cottage to be seen throughout the country.
